THE PROFILE OF THE CURRENT EDITOR IN CHIEF

MR GAORETELELWE BENJAMIN PHUTI

Gaoretelelwe Benjamin Phuti has recently been appointed as the Editor in Chief of the Setswana National Lexicography Unit known to as SEFALA, the structure of PanSALB. Mr Phuti is a former Deputy Subject Group Leader of the Department of Language Practice in the School of Languages of the North West University, Mahikeng Campus from 01 February 2018 until 31 December 2021. He is the Chief Editor of the English- Setswana bi-directional Oxford School Dictionary published in 2020. He is a proofreader of the Oxford First Bilingual Children Dictionary published in 2021. Mr Phuti is also the Editor in Chief of Oxford Primary Illustrated Maths Bilingual Dictionary (English-Setswana) that saw the light of day in 2022.

Gaoretelelwe Benjamin Phuti was the Head of the Language, Translation and Editing Section in the Communication Directorate of the North West Department of Education and Sport Development from April 2011 to January 2018. He also served the same department as the Head of Department of Languages at Barolong Secondary School from Mid-January 2003 to March 2011. He was the Setswana, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and ICT Teacher at Mmabatho High School from April 1998 to mid-January 2003.

Mr Phuti served the NW Education Department with aplomb as a teacher, Grade 12 Marker, Senior Marker and Internal Moderator of Setswana Paper 2 from 2004 to 2011. He is holding a Master of Arts degree in Language Practice from the University of the Free State, BA Hons in Translation and Interpreting with-distinction, BA Honours in Setswana and BA in Education from the North West University, Mahikeng Campus.

Mr Phuti is an author of Setswana CAPS Books, an editor, a translator, an interpreter, a lexicographer, a terminographer, language practitioner, a teacher and an ICT Tutor. He has been a member of the North West Provincial Language Committee (NWPLC) for 2 consecutive terms from 2012 to 2018 and a committee representative in the Setswana National Language Body (SetNLB) in the same period. He became a full member of the Setswana National Language Body from August 2019 to December 2021. As a Member of the SetNLB, Mr Phuti was a Deputy Chairperson and a Convenor for the Standardisation, Terminology and Orthography Technical Committee.
