in Chief Shares Lexicographic Expertise with SETM 322 Students at North West

The
Setswana National Lexicography Unit (SEFALA) was invited by the Department of
Setswana (Humanities) at North West University, Mahikeng Campus, to participate
in a lecture aimed at enriching third-year students’ understanding of
dictionaries and lexicography. The lecture was held on 17 August 2026 as part
of the SETM322 module.
The Editor in Chief of SEFALA, Mr Benjamin Gaoretelelwe Phuti, delivered the lecture to third-year Setswana students, with Ms Tshiamo Boitumelo Montshiwagae and Mr Gagoitsiwe Steven Dikgwele, lexicographers at the Unit, also in attendance.
Mr Phuti shared his knowledge and expertise in lexicography, drawing from his experience as the Editor-in-Chief of a Setswana National Lexicography Unit. His presentation focused on the fundamental principles of dictionaries, including what a dictionary is, how it is structured, and its purpose and functions.
The
students were introduced to the different types of dictionaries and the various
considerations involved in compiling and using them. Mr Phuti further explained
how words are presented in dictionaries and emphasised the importance of
understanding the context in which words are used. He also discussed aspects
such as the origin of words (etymology), their parts of speech, and appropriate usage.
The lecture
provided students with an opportunity to gain practical insight into the work
involved in dictionary compilation and the role that dictionaries play in
preserving, developing and promoting the Setswana language. It also allowed
students to connect their academic knowledge with the practical work carried
out by language practitioners and lexicographers.
SEFALA
values opportunities to engage with institutions of higher learning and
contribute to the development of future language practitioners. The Unit looks
forward to strengthening its collaboration with the Department of Setswana and
other academic institutions through similar initiatives that promote Setswana
language development, linguistic awareness and lexicographic knowledge.
